ABSTRACT

Covid-19 has impacted the health and well-being of children worldwide. The aim of this study was to evaluate parental acceptance of and concerns about vaccinating their children against Covid-19 in Ras Al-Khaimah, United Arab Emirates. The study adopted a cross-sectional design. Parental acceptance of and concerns about vaccinating their children were collected using a structured questionnaire. A total of 366 parents were selected, using purposive sampling from the Emirate of Ras Al Khaimah, during the period of November 2021 to February 2022. Of all, 5.3% (56) of the parents expressed a high level of concern regarding vaccinating their children against Covid-19, while 80.6% (295) expressed a medium level and 4.1% (15) a low level of concern. Parental acceptance was found to be medium and high among 71% (260) and 8.8% (69) of the parents respectively, as opposed to 10.1% (37) who were reluctant (low) to do so. The most important concerns for the low acceptance of Covid-19 vaccination were safety, side effects and effectiveness of the vaccination. The study reveals the need to initiate more targeted interventions to improve the acceptability of vaccines and the acceptance of the parents in order to alleviate the concerns of parents about vaccinating their children against Covid-19.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The main objectives of the current study were to find out the frequencies of Psychiatric disorders in the general population during COVID-19 and to compare the gender-based association between newly diagnosed patients during COVID-19 with already existing psychiatric patients in Peshawar to provide patient care on priority bases. METHODOLOGY: This Cross-sectional design study was carried out in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, HMC/MTI, from May to August 2020. Those patients who approached psychiatry OPD through video/audio online calls and could understand and respond to suggestions were included. The bio-data was collected, and DSM-5 criteria were used for diagnosis. Descriptive statistics were used for statistical significance, and the statistical package of social sciences (SPSS-21) was used for analysis and results. RESULTS: The results findings of the current study revealed that 59.3% of the patients approached for telepsychiatry consultation were from the district of Peshawar. Among them, 54% were female, and most patients were young married females (50.7%) with no job outside the home. The finding further revealed that most of the sample affected by psychiatric illness were uneducated (31.3%) and unemployed (28%). Furthermore, in the present findings, 46% of patients were diagnosed with depression, and 12% had Dissociative disorders. CONCLUSION: It is concluded from the present study that in the Covid-19 Pandemic, primarily females who were married with no job description are more vulnerable to psychiatric illness. Furthermore, during Covid-19 mostly cases were reported with depression and dissociative disorders. © 2023, Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences.

ABSTRACT

Background: The novel COVID-19 outbreak has infected human population all around the world. Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) diagnosis in a rapid manner remains challenging for health care professionals. Currently, RT-qPCR technique is extensively practiced in SARS-CoV-2 diagnosis and is considered as gold standard. The constraints of RT-qPCR, high cost and need for trained technician, longer detection time, highlighted the need for alternate healthcare diagnostic approaches. They follow the WHO assured standard and offer the health-care sector optimism. One of them is the Loop Mediated isothermal amplification system (LAMP). There is no need for costly equipment like thermal cycler since LAMP assay is performed at a fixed temperature. It can also be implemented as a point of care testing device. RT-LAMP is one of the extensively used isothermal amplification system in pathogen diagnostics.Aims: The current study aims to validate and standardize RT-LAMP assay for rapid diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2 in both lab and field conditions. The reactions can be carried out using a heating vessel including the use of a water bath and end-point detection by colorimetry. A rising middle ground of tiny, more portable technology, that provides most of the capability at less cost and time. Methods and Results: 20 Samples were taken from COVID-19 positive patients. RNA extraction from COVID-19 samples was followed up by one-step reverse transcription and loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP). LAMP primers were designed to amplify the conserved regions of SARS-COV-2 specific genes. The target regions for primer design were selected after genome-wide sequence alignment of SARS-CoV-2 strains isolated in various regions of the world i.e., Europe, Africa, Asia, and North America. RT-LAMP assays were performed at the specific incubation temperature (60°C) for 50 minutes. Assay was optimized as per consumable compatibility, COVID template integrity, primer concentration, template concentration, primer ratio, testing time etc. Sensitivity and specificity of the assay was elucidated. Finally, different end-point analysis i.e., Agarose Gel Electrophoresis and Colorimetry have been used to interpret the results. Conclusion: RT-LAMP assay has shown to be a quick and accurate diagnostic method that can be put to use for SARS-CoV-2 detection in laboratories and Point-of- Care settings. © 2022 IEEE.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: To determine the level of depression, anxiety and stress in pathologists due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Materials and methods: It was a Cross-sectional Analytical Multicenter Questionnaire-based study conducted from April 2020 to June 2020 including Pathologists working in Khyber Teaching Hospital and Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences, Islam-abad. Informed written consent was obtained and DASS-21 Questionnaire was administered. Data were analysed by SPSS. Levels of depression, anxiety and stress were determined and analysed by multiple regression mothod to predict depression anxiety and stress levels from demographics. Results: Mean age of the study sample was 25-63 (37±8.75). There were 13(22.4%) males and 45(77.6%) females. Overall DAS score, mean depression, anxiety and stress score were 31.5±22, 8.7±9.1, 7.4±7.1 and 15.3±9 respectively. Females had a higher overall DAS score (U=156.5, p=.011), depression score (U=178.5, p=.032) and anxiety score (U=168.5, p=.029) as compared to males. Anxiety scores were highest in pathologists working in the microbiology section and lowest in those of the chemical pathology section (χ2=8.13, p=.043). Multiple regression analysis showed that the female gender was significantly associated with a higher overall DAS score (β=13.69, p=.047) and stress score (β=6.10, p=.031) as compared to the male gender. Conclusion: Pathologists working in the Covid-19 pandemic have a high level of mental distress and females have a higher level of psychological distress as compared to males. Implementation of mental support programmes for health care workers during pandemic situations is required to provide psychological support to health care workers.
